Chapter 1: Place Value and Money

In this chapter, you will learn about place value and money. You will also learn how to add, subtract and multiply numbers in different ways.

Chapter 2: Addition and Subtraction

Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Inverse operations are those that undo each other. The simplest way to understand this is through a classic activity: baking a cake. When you bake a cake, you mix together ingredients in order to create a final product. This process of combining things is addition, while the act of separating them back into their original components is subtraction—in this case pulling out the ingredients from your mixing bowl and placing them in separate containers (or eating them all with chocolate frosting if you’re me).

The same idea applies when adding or subtracting numbers—you can add or subtract them before they’ve been combined into larger ones! To help make sense of these concepts, let’s use base ten blocks as our model for counting objects (or whatever else it takes to mentally represent those numbers).

Chapter 3: Rounding and Estimation

The following math problems require rounding and estimation. The answers are given in parentheses after each question.

  • Round 9,542 to the nearest ten thousand.
  • Round 5,914 to the nearest hundred.
  • Estimate (round to the closest ten thousand), what is three times more than 10?

Chapter 4: Multiplication Concepts

In this chapter, you will learn how to multiply two whole numbers. You also need to understand what a multiple is.

You will use a multiplication table to solve all problems in this chapter.

In addition, you will learn how to multiply a number by 10 and 100 and multiples of ten through the use of the chart below:

  • When multiplying by 9, add one more 0 at the end of the number that is being multiplied by 9 (i.e., 6 x 9 = 60). This rule applies for any number under 100 (i.e., 5 x 8 = 40).
  • When multiplying any single digit number by 1 or 2, just add them together (i.e., 6 x 7 = 42). This rule applies for all single digit numbers except those whose last digit ends in 5 or greater than 5 (i.e., 6 x 7 = 42 but 65 x 7 = 485).
  • If there are two digits on each side of an equal sign (=) then both sides must be equal after solving for missing values within parentheses and brackets; otherwise, one side would have more zeros than another side which would make it impossible for there ever existed such unique solution where both sides have no zeros neither left over nor right over!

  • Division is a way of breaking down a number into smaller parts.

To write it out more clearly, let us change our diagram slightly:

Now you can see for yourself that if we multiply 3 x 2 = 6 then indeed 24/6=3

This chapter will help you understand fractional representations of numbers, convert between fractions and decimals, convert between fractions and percents, compare fractions, mixed numbers and decimals, add or subtract fractions (including mixed numbers), and multiply fractions.

Chapter 7: Geometry

Geometry is a branch of mathematics that studies the sizes, shapes, positions angles and dimensions of things. Geometry is a part of mathematics that studies the shapes, sizes and positions of things. A circle can be described as having zero area because it has no sides at all.
