When I was a beginner at mathematics, I didn’t like algebra. I found it too abstract and complicated. And when my teacher started presenting algebra in the form of formulas, well that was it for me. I couldn’t understand what formulas had to do with real life, so I gave up trying. However, after several years when I finished school, my opinion changed completely: formulas began to confuse me more than anything else…

 

Algebra is a branch of mathematics concerning the study of the properties of unknown numbers (called variables). The word algebra is also used in reference to this study and its symbols. In the past, algebra was regarded as a part of arithmetic, but it is now something distinct which is not taught separately,—for example, it is not covered by the “Arithmetic” section of the International Mathematical Olympiad.
