The Preschool Language Scale-4 (PLS-4) is the most recent version of the language evaluation scale. This test was invented by Sally Ward, Ph.D., and is used to evaluate language development in children between the ages of 2 and 5. The PLS-4 is a criterion referenced test which means that it provides a list of criteria describing age appropriate speech and language development in preschoolers. The administrator reads the list of criteria against which the child’s performance is compared to determine how well the child did on the test. The PLS-4 can be either computer or paper scored if you choose to purchase it. It comes with both types of scoring so that you are prepared for whatever type of scoring a service requests when you take your child for evaluation.
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a standardised international benchmark of language proficiency levels and aims to facilitate the recognition of qualifications across Europe. It is endorsed by the Council of Europe and member States, educational institutions and international organisations. The CEFR was designed to cover all educational levels from ‘learning in childhood’ to ‘teacher training.’ There are seven levels for each of the four language skills: reading, grammar and vocabulary, listening comprehension, speaking and writing. The benchmarks are broad categories which reflect what most people can do with a language by adulthood. They are intended not just to measure skill, but also to serve as norms or guidelines for what learners should be able to do by the end of each level.
