This book can be considered a generalization of the preceding chapters, but it differs in several respects. First, we shall not concern ourselves with the basic properties of vector spaces and linear transformations. Instead, our aim will be to present some topics which require more advanced methods (e.g., theorems), and others which do not form part of the prerequisite knowledge and which represent applications (primarily computational) of linear algebra as such.
Linear algebra is a branch of mathematics that includes vector spaces, their norms, linear mappings, and other related concepts. A vector space is a set of objects or elements that can be added together and multiplied by numbers (scalars) in order to produce a new object. The free textbook Linear Algebra by Gilbert Strang has been very popular among math students for decades for its clear and concise presentation at the undergraduate level. Other free textbooks like Linear Algebra: A Modern Introduction by James Munkres also have been used by students worldwide. Moreover, many universities today have moved to digital formats for distributing textbooks as well as other course materials to save money and space on transportation costs. Thus, an ebook reader like the Amazon Kindle is an ideal choice to buy textbooks without spending huge amounts on hard-copy books or going through the stress of returning them back to the bookstore after using them.
