It is generally understood that the discipline of political science came into its own during the early 19th century, and that its roots are to be found in intellectual developments which came mainly from England, France, and Germany. On closer examination it appears that modern political science had its genesis in two somewhat different traditions: one burgeoning in England, especially among Whigs, and the other emerging on the continent particularly among German historical idealists. The English tradition tracesits ultimate origins to the “country Whigs” who developed some of the earliest systematic statements of liberal democracy and social contract theory.
The origins of the political science can be traced to the emergence of interdisciplinary scientific approaches to the study and analysis of government.
