Mountain flying or mountain operations is a term referring to aircraft flight operations in steep, mountainous terrain. These operations include both visual and instrument flight rules (IFR) conditions and may include extended-range operation.[1] Mountain flying necessitates flight in areas with icing, turbulence, strong winds, low visibility, confined spaces, sudden changes in weather and other hazards. The increased risks inherent in mountain flying result from the greater challenges of navigation, approach and departure due to the underlying topography of the area.
Mountain Flying is a manual for pilots flying in mountainous terrain. Produced by the European Air Safety Agency, it is intended as an aid to pilots, air traffic controllers and instructors in addressing the specific challenges of mountain flying.
