There are many blog posts, books and videos out there on how to do research in computer science, but I haven’t seen many sources that specifically deals with research methods. Hence, I decided to write this post on research methods in computer science for my fellow programmers. If you decide to study for a degree/certificate/diploma in computer science or software engineering then you will often come across the term “research methods”. Just like a degree in mathematics is not the same as drawing a picture of a mathematical equation, research methods is an umbrella term which refers to a wide range of disciplines within computer science and software engineering. There are many different “types” of research methods and it might be daunting at first to try and find your way around them all.

Research can be a very exciting process of learning new things. But it can also be tedious and boring, especially if you are not experienced in doing it. Research can be divided into many areas, depending on the topic you will cover. In this article, let’s focus on research methods in computer science.

I have that PDF file, but let me summarize the most relevant research methods in computer science. If you have time, it would be great if you read the entire document though. I’ve tried to make it as short as possible so that you can use the time for actually coding stuff up. Also, before I go into the essence of the research methods in computer science, there are three important things to keep in mind when conducting any sort of research: talking to users and the entire “human element,” measuring things (and doing it with care), and collecting feedback from others.
