Student Centered Learning in Science. The National Context for Study of SCLS There is a growing interest, particularly among scientists, in the idea of student-centered learning, both at the classroom level and for exploring issues relevant to science education more generally. Many people who have been involved with inquiry-based and project-learning approaches have begun to think about the most important ways that students can learn science and other disciplines. This interest in understanding students’ thinking has grown out of concern with assessments of student progress, and has been stimulated by demands for accountability. Interest in finding ways to better understand how students learn also is related to a growing concern among scientists about the quality of future scientists entering their disciplines (NRC 1986; Camara et al. 1989).
