The Catechism Of The Catholic Church Overview

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a comprehensive summary of the Catholic faith and is used as a reference by all Catholics, whether they are religious scholars or not.

The Catechism was created in 1994 by Pope John Paul II in order to help Catholics know and understand their faith. It has been translated into many languages and is available online in English.

The Catechism is divided into four parts: God, Man and His Well-Being in Christ, The Church, and Prayer. Each part is further divided into chapters that address various aspects of the Catholic faith such as baptism, marriage, prayer, etc.

Each chapter begins with an introduction that sets up the topic being discussed and then has several paragraphs explaining more about it. There are also questions at the end of each chapter so that readers can reflect on what they’ve just read and understand it better.

Introduction

It wasn’t long before I was working my way through the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a massive document containing all of the formal teachings of the Catholic Church. While it is not necessary to read the catechism in its entirety to become Catholic, I found it helpful. The catechism gives a clear explanation of what Catholics believe, and why they believe it. As someone who grew up in another denomination, I found that it filled in some gaps in my understanding of the faith.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a summary of the truths of Christ as transmitted and taught by the Church He founded. The Catholic Catechism covers four major areas of our faith life: The Apostles Creed, the celebration of the Christian mystery (the sacraments), life in Christ, and Christian prayer.

The book was written chiefly by Pope John Paul II’s catechetical team with contributions from Bishops from around the world. They used Vatican II documents as well as previous documents such as Dei Verbum (The Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation) to guide them in writing this document which was first published by Libreria Editrice Vaticana in 1992 under Pope John Paul II

They are the new People of God.

The Church is the People of God, who together with their shepherds, are called to proclaim the Gospel of God and to carry out his mission in the world. Together with them, we believe in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; we profess our faith in Christ Jesus; we celebrate the Eucharist; we look forward to life eternal. As members of this holy people in whom all gifts have been deposited like riches offered for each other’s good (cf. 1 Cor., 12:7-8), you are called by Baptism to be a shining sign of Christ’s presence among men by your witness and service throughout your lives.
