Emotion has been a topic at the centre of literary theory since Plato declared that mimesis was an inferior representation of an action, emotion, or idea. The problem, however, is that while the concept of emotion seems easy to grasp in theory – it is actually very difficult to define as it involves an incredibly complex relationship between ideas, thoughts and emotions. I began writing this post because I wanted to talk about this important topic from the perspective of a writer who has had a great deal of criticism for the lack of emotional depth in her work.
