The Handmaid’s Tale Overview

The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian novel written by Margaret Atwood. The story is set in the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian society that has replaced the United States government.

In this society, women are divided into three classes: Wives, who are allowed to have children; Marthas, who are domestic servants; and Handmaids, who are forced to bear children for other couples. The Handmaids were originally fertile women who had been married before Gilead was established and their husbands were killed or exiled; now any fertile woman may be selected for this role.

The story focuses on Offred (a handmaid), who is assigned as a handmaid to Fred Waterford and his wife Serena Joy, who had previously been an outspoken advocate for traditional values such as family values and Christianity. The narrator recounts her experiences as a handmaid in this new society where women have no rights and the state seeks to control everything she says or does. A major theme in the book is how Offred deals with her role as a handmaid while trying to maintain her sense of self in a world where all of her decisions have been taken away from her by men who see women only as breeding machines or property that can be purchased or traded at

The Handmaid’s Tale Summary

Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian novel set in the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian society that has replaced the United States of America. The novel was published in 1985. In her book, Atwood presents a fictional world where women are subject to systematic oppression and discrimination.

The novel takes place over three hundred years after an environmental disaster called “the Waterless Flood” caused by toxic waste from chemical weapons detonated at nuclear power plants across North America wipes out most of humanity and renders large areas uninhabitable. After decades of chaos and anarchy, two religious fundamentalist groups emerge: The Sons of Jacob (SJ) who believe they are ordained by God himself to rule all people on Earth; and The Angels who reject any kind of hierarchical leadership structure as an affront to God’s will. Atwood uses these two factions as proxies for real-world religions such as Judaism or Christianity respectively but also acknowledges their similarities with other world religions like Islam or Buddhism; for example both groups practice polygamy which is considered forbidden among Christians even though it is allowed under certain conditions within the Bible itself (Leviticus 21:10-14).
