In philosophy of science, confirmation holism is an epistemological theory proposed by Bas van Fraassen in 1980. According to it observations never confirm theories or hypotheses directly, instead they only confirm some abstract structure (such as a model or mathematical equations) that the theory depends upon. Only the existence of this abstract structure (rather than any particular instance of it) is confirmed by any observation; hence the name “confirmation holism”. The main consequence of such an approach is that there can be no “crucial experiments” for a theory and thus no falsification.
The philosophy of science seeks a rigorous analysis and critical evaluation of science, its methods, and its presuppositions.
