The first English translation of the Bible to be printed and published in England, the William Tyndale Bible ushered in the era of the Protestant Reformation and established English as the language in which most Protestant Christians worship. The New Testament was first printed in 1525 from an unfinished translation by Tyndale. It appeared in 1526 with revisions by Myles Coverdale, who borrowed heavily from Tyndale’s work. A second edition, printed in Cologne and Worms, Germany, was issued later that year. By 1529, it was common practice to burn newly-printed English bibles if they contained Tyndale’s translation, which was also banned by royal proclamations under King Henry VIII of England. To evade this persecution, copies of Tyndale’s translation were often smuggled into England and Scotland or even dressed up as Catholic versions. The most widely available English Bible at that time was a 1483 edition of the Great Bible commissioned by the Church of England. All copies of Bibles were ordered to be seized and destroyed upon Tyndale’s execution by burning on 6 October 1536 in Vilvoorde, Flanders (now Belgium). Only approximately 20 complete copies survive today; one was discovered bound with pages from another book

William Tyndale (or, as he was known in his time frame: William Frye) likely had no idea that his translations of the Bible would have such a historical impact on the English-speaking world. In fact, he likely did not even have an idea that the Bible existed! The word “Bible” was not used to describe the Christian holy book until after Tyndale’s translated-versions became available.

William Tyndale (1494 – 6 August 1536) was an English scholar who became a leading figure in Protestant reform in the years leading up to his execution. He is well known for his translation of the Bible into English.
