Ruby Bridges was born on September 8, 1954, in Tylertown, Mississippi. She was the first African-American child to enroll in the Tuscumbia, Alabama, public school system. On November 14th of that year, she became the first black child to integrate a white Southern school during the Civil Rights Movement. Her father, Abon Bridges Sr., made a living as a sharecropper prior to becoming a Baptist minister around 1956.
